Gain valuable professional experience on the frontlines of Northern Thailand’s English-language publishing industry. Our interns work in a modern office rooted in Chiang Mai’s trendiest district. Interning at a Magazine in Thailand – A day in the life

Chiang Mai’s laid-back, international atmosphere makes it a top choice for expatriates in Southeast Asia. With the base of foreign professionals, teachers and NGO employees comes a robust demand for English-language news and entertainment. For up-and-coming professionals, this spells unexpected internship possibilities.

Through an exclusive arrangement, Friends For Asia places qualified applicants in internship positions with Northern Thailand’s most successful English-language entertainment magazine. It’s released once a month and includes everything from announcements concerning local events to in-depth features relevant to the whole of Southeast Asia.

The periodical also has its own web-based needs and services, and the project isn’t just for writers. Internship opportunities are available in the following areas.

  • Editorial writing
  • Print and design
  • Photography
  • Marketing
  • Web Design
  • Multimedia design

The main office is staffed by a mix of Western and Thai employees. As the magazine caters directly to Northern Thailand’s international community, all of the employees speak excellent English. The average workday lasts from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Depending on how long your internship lasts, you may find yourself working a weekend or staffing the magazine’s monthly party.

Magazine Intern Tasks

Due to the deadline-oriented nature of the magazine’s work, only highly motivated, fluent English speakers will be considered for this project. Furthermore, you’ll be expected to have a working understanding of the specific area to which you’re applying. Only one intern will be accepted into each position at a time, but there’s a potential for crossover when availability and the intern’s background permit.

Intern Building Experience

It’s no secret that publishing is a hard field to break into, and many employers expect their prospective employees to have a modicum of experience before even considering them for a position. Chiang Mai is an unabashedly “live-able” city, and many of its foreign residents didn’t intend to put roots down. For the average traveler, the chance to spend four or more weeks here soaking up the atmosphere and culture is hard to turn down. Add the opportunity to build experience directly relevant to the publishing industry, and it’s all but impossible for an aspiring writer or photographer to pass on this one.

Furthermore, the magazine is helmed by an open-minded managing editor with an eye for talent. If you’re an ambitious self-starter, you stand to glean a great deal from this project and may even have the opportunity to spearhead your own project. Interns who deliver high-quality, engaging material also have the potential to be published.
